When the naked body of a teenage girl is discovered on the banks of the River Baztán, it is immediately linked to a similar murder that occurred one month prior. Rumors soon spread across Elizondo, a neighbouring hamlet. Is it the basajaun, the 'invisible protector' of Basque mythology, or a ritualistic killer? Inspector Amaia Salazar conducts the inquiry, which takes her back to her birthplace in the Basque Country, where she had planned to never return. It's a site of unsolved problems and a dreadful secret from Amaia's childhood that will come back to haunt her, shrouded in mist and surrounded by impenetrable woodlands. Faced with the village's beliefs, Amaia must address her past demons in order to confront the reality of a serial killer on the loose. However, as she becomes more immersed in the research, she senses the presence of something sinister lurking in the shadows...
