Algernon Moncrieff is taken aback when he learns that his wealthy friend, whom he refers to as "Ernest," is actually named Jack Worthing. Jack created his alter ego to get away from his country estate, where he looks after Cecily Cardew. Cecily thinks Ernest is Jack's rogue brother and admires his wild ways. Seeing an opportunity, Algernon disguises himself as Ernest and sneaks away to court Cecily.
