Guy Holden is smitten by Mimi Glossop, unaware that she is married. Her delirious aunt and inept lawyer employ a professional correspondent to pretend as her boyfriend in order to obtain a divorce. Guy unwittingly gives Mimi the code phrase, which leads her to believe he's the fake boyfriend—and she misinterprets his real affection as part of the play.
