Jim Bennett is a professor of literature, but he is also a high-stakes gambler who lives a secret life. Bennett has always been willing to take risks, but when he borrows money from a gangster and puts his own life up as collateral, he bets everything. He stays one step ahead by putting his creditor against the person in charge of an illegal gambling ring. This gets Frank's attention, who is a caring loan shark. As his feelings for a student grow, Bennett must put everything on the line to get a second chance.
