Yamashita, a white-collar worker who discovers his wife has a lover visiting her while he's abroad, returns home unexpectedly and murders her. He returns to a tiny village after eight years in prison, runs a barber shop (he was trained as a barber in prison), and speaks to almost no one except the eel he "befriended" while in prison. One day, he discovers the comatose body of Keiko, a suicide attempt who reminds him of his wife. She begins working at his shop, but he forbids her from getting too close to him.
