In 140 AD, twenty years after the mysterious disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the Scottish mountains, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) arrives from Rome to unravel the mystery and restore his father's reputation as the Ninth's commander. Marcus travels forth through Hadrian's Wall, accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Bell), into the unknown highlands of Caledonia, to face its ferocious tribes, make peace with his father's memories, and collect the lost legion's golden insignia, the Eagle of the Ninth.
