As Paul Shepherson and Ben Geary investigate the murder of a US senator exhibiting the striking hallmarks of the famed Soviet assassin 'Cassius,' it becomes clear that they will need to work together to solve this case. Shepherdson has spent his entire career following Cassius, and he is confident that his arch-nemesis is no longer alive. However, his former supervisor, Tom Highland, persuades him to take on the job. The reemergence of Cassius is certain to Geary, who wrote his Master's thesis on Shepherdson's hunt of the Soviet assassin.
