The Color Purple

Celie, an African-American lady living in the South who endures great brutality and hatred over the course of forty years, is the subject of this epic novel. Celie's violent father forces her to marry the equally demeaning "Mister" Albert Johnson, and things only get worse from there. As a result, Celie is forced to seek companionship in any place she can find it. She holds on to her hope of one day being reunited with her sister in Africa, and she perseveres in her efforts. Alice Walker's novel serves as the inspiration for this film adaptation.
