In 1934, Diego Padilla wins the Spanish Chess Championship and meets Marianne Latour, a French journalist, with whom he falls in love. Toward the end of the Civil War, Marianne persuades Diego to relocate to France with their daughter, where Diego will be accused of espionage by the Nazis and imprisoned in an SS jail shortly thereafter. Diego will attempt to survive in prison thanks to Colonel Maier's love of chess, which will help him to survive in a dangerous situation.
