The movie modernizes Clarice Lispector's novel Uma Aprendizagem ou O Livro dos Prazeres. Lóri is portrayed in the story as a lonely, depressed woman. She splits her time between her responsibilities as a teacher at a school and her romances, which are almost always brief and superficial. By coincidence, she encounters Ulisses, a renowned philosopher and provocateur who is also self-centered. Despite the fact that he has little knowledge of women, Lóri learns from him how to love and deal with her own loneliness.
