The Black Sleep

The story takes place in 19th-century England, when a prominent brain surgeon saves a former student who is about to be executed on a bogus murder charge and whisks him away to a historic abbey in the countryside. His pupil is tricked into assisting him in mapping the functioning of various brain regions using living people who have been subjected to a horrific animation-suspending drug known as "black sleep." When the student and a subject's family member learn that most of these subjects have survived, they are taken to a dungeon-like cellar where they are being held in various states of derangement...
