The Birth of a Nation

In filmmaker D.W. Griffith's controversial Civil War epic, two families intertwine: abolitionist Northerners the Stonemans and Southern landowners the Camerons. Nurse Elsie Stoneman appeals for the pardon of Confederate colonel Ben Cameron when he is captured in combat. Cameron founds the Ku Klux Klan in Reconstruction-era South Carolina, fighting Elsie's congressman father and his black protégé, Silas Lynch.
