Sam Dalmas, an American writer who lives in Rome, sees a young woman and a man in a black coat fighting violently in an art gallery one night as he walks home. Dalmas tries to help, but he gets caught between the electronic glass doors of the gallery. The woman is left bleeding from knife wounds. When asked by the police what happened, the shocked author tries to remember every detail. Dalmas is sure he forgot something about the crime, so he starts his own investigation. He and his girlfriend Giulia become possible targets for the killer.
