Centers around Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis, two odd allies in the fight to desegregate Durham, North Carolina's public schools during the racially volatile summer of1971. Atwater was a vocal civil rights activist and Ellis was a local Ku Klux Klan leader. Durham's life, as well as Atwater's and Ellis's, would be altered forever by the shocking events that transpired.
