The 39 Steps

An African mining engineer on vacation in London finds the life of a socialite, Richard Hannay, to be utterly monotonous. When a secret agent storms into his room and hands him a coded notebook on the impending outbreak of World War I, he finds out that this is more than he bargained. In little time at all, Hannay is being pursued by German operatives and the British law, both of whom are fervently interested in the Roman numerals code, which Hannay believes he must crack himself.
