Oscar Grubman is surrounded by stunning ladies. He is sensitive and sympathetic, speaks fluent French, loves Voltaire, and believes a woman's hands reveal her most. Oscar tells his best pal on the train home from Chauncey Academy for the Thanksgiving weekend that he will win his true love's heart. However, Oscar's true love is his stepmother Eve. Oscar is convinced he can better his father's work-obsessed father. He loses Eve's heart and feels defeated. Diane, Eve's best friend, crosses Oscar's path one night while wearing Eve's borrowed perfumed scarf, offering him temporary comfort in an unorthodox tryst. Oscar fills a hole in Diane's life. Oscar is distracted by Diane while his pursuit of Eve leads to an unexpected conclusion.
