When Dr. Anthony Edwardes arrives at a Vermont mental institution to replace the departing hospital director, Dr. Constance Peterson, a psychotherapist, discovers that Edwardes is a forger. The man admits that the real Dr. Edwardes is deceased and expresses concern that he may have killed him, but he cannot recollect anything. Dr. Peterson, however, is certain that his impersonator is innocent of the man's murder and joins him in a quest to uncover his amnesia via psychoanalysis.
