Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old Nepalese girl who lives with her family in a small hut on top of a mountain with a view of the surrounding countryside. The Himalayan monsoons wash away the family's crops, prompting Lakshmi's father to order her to leave home and find work in order to provide for her family's needs. He introduces her to a gorgeous stranger who assures her that she will be able to get her work as a maid in the city if she wants it. Lakshmi is delighted to be able to assist and travels to India, where she arrives at "Happiness House" full of optimism. However, she quickly discovers the terrible truth: she has been sold into prostitution.
