A young woman who is anxious to find a treatment for her only child's illness is drawn to the haunting ghost town of Silent Hill despite its desolate and abandoned appearance. Rose is unable to accept the prognosis that her daughter should be permanently institutionalized for psychiatric care, so she takes her child and runs away, headed for the deserted town in quest of answers while disregarding her husband's protests. It becomes immediately apparent that she has never been anyplace else quite like this location. It is shrouded in mist, home to a wide variety of weird creatures, and subject to occasional invasions by a living "darkness" that can actually alter the appearance of anything it comes into contact with. Rose is learning the history of the odd town as she looks for her missing daughter, and she is coming to the conclusion that her daughter is merely a player in a much greater game as she does so.
