Royal Opera House: Madama Butterfly

Lieutenant Pinkerton, the dashing American officer who proposed to Cio-Cio-San, the young Japanese bride, abandons her shortly after their wedding. She lives in the hope that one day he would come back for her. Cio-Cio-San and her son saw Pinkerton's ship docked in the harbor three years later. In anticipation of his arrival, she eagerly awaits the arrival of Pinkerton and his American wife Kate, but they are simply in town to take the boy away and raise him in the United States. When Cio-Cio-San says goodbye to her son, she commits suicide.
