In 1968, engineer Giorgio Rosa developed the independent state called "The Island of Roses" off the coastline of Rimini, improved a platform outside the territorial waters, with Esperanto as the main language. The Italian authorities did not take it well because the micronation was viewed as an expedient to not pay taxes on the profits gotten thanks to the arrival of countless tourists and also interested people.
