On a cross-country road trip in1958, two adolescents take their prized possession, a Chevy hopped up, and head to California to compete in the National Championship drag races. A gang of town punks who lose to them and then accuse them of cheating, as well as a local cop who is obsessed with putting these two "juvenile delinquents" in jail, all meet up with a pretty but dingy waitress who quits her job and jumps in their car. She turns out to be more trouble than they thought.
