Noboru Yasumoto is dissatisfied with his first appointment after medical school, which places him in a rural clinic run by the brusque doctor Red Beard. Yasumoto had hoped for an easy position as the personal physician of an affluent family. Red Beard is a knowledgeable and patient teacher, despite Yasumoto's frequent acts of defiance. He ultimately assigns his student to care for a prostitute rescued from a local brothel, after gradually introducing him to the unglamorous side of the job.
