Reaching for the Moon

Visiting an old college buddy in Rio de Janeiro is on the itinerary of New York poet Elizabeth Bishop in 1951. Elizabeth is overcome by the sensuality of Brazilian women. In contrast to Mary's dashing lover, Lota de Macedo Soares, she is stoic and demure. In spite of their initial reluctance, both the poet and the architect eventually fall for each other's charms. Mary feels envious, but Lota, ever the rebel, is hellbent on having both of them. They're in the middle of a ménage à trois when Lota begins work on her largest project yet: Rio's Parque do Flamengo. When Elizabeth moves to the United States to pursue a career in academia, the two women become estranged. Lota, who is usually full of self-assurance, is inconsolable right now. When the 1964 military takeover takes place, we see this everlasting triangle. A film on the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop centers on her powerful poetry, which are well depicted in the film.
