While working as a sharecropper in Florida, Ray Charles lost his sight at the age of seven. He discovered his true passion and talent behind a piano keyboard, thanks to his fiercely independent mother who encouraged he create his own way. The soulful vocalist established a reputation and then rocketed into worldwide recognition when he pioneered the combination of gospel and country music on the Southern music scene.
