Louise Harrington (Linney) is a 39-year-old divorcee who works at Columbia University's School of the Arts admissions office. After receiving an application from F. Scott Feinstadt, the name of her high school sweetheart who was murdered in a car tragedy, she phones the student to set up an interview. She is immediately terrified. She begins to wonder if this young artist is the reincarnation of her old flame because of the striking resemblance between his appearance, demeanor, and painting style. Within a few hours of meeting, the two begin an illicit relationship. Peter, Louise's ex-husband and her brother Sammy, her best friend, are also complicating her life. Sammy is a bad boy who is adored by their mother even though he isn't the best. Louise's best friend, Missy, stole the original Scott from Louise before his death and seems to be planning to do the same with the contemporary Scott.
