Hattie (Susan Sarandon), a New Orleans prostitute, meets a photographer named Bellocq (Keith Carradine) in her brothel one night, and he befriends her 12-year-old daughter, Violet, after photographing her (Brooke Shields). Violet quickly loses her innocence and becomes preoccupied with reconciling with Bellocq after her mother's madam hires her as a working girl and Hattie leaves town to get married.
