This film is a coming-of-age drama about five teens growing up in Harlem, New York, during the 1980s. A new generation of kids known as the "hip hop" generation is born, which unfortunately occurs at the same time as the "crack cocaine" generation grows up in the same neighborhood. Karon slips into a deep sleep shortly after receiving his diploma in 1985. Being able to have dreams within dreams propels him into a realistic scenario that includes his prospective future as a drug-selling adolescent in the 1990s. His need for quick money is detrimental to the community, and eventually his closest friends are caught up in the crossfire of his illegal activities, which leads to his arrest. He awakens in 1985, understanding that the "easy way out" that had been promised was not a magnificent new beginning, but rather the beginning of the end for him.
