Frank Capra tells Damon Runyon's narrative, which is both lovely and amusing, in his own unique style. Boozed up and brassy Apple Old Broadway is just as much a part of downtown New York as a beggar with an apple basket. Dave the Dude is a big fan of her apples because he believes they will bring him good fortune. Annie's daughter Louise, who has spent her entire life in a convent in Spain, is coming to America with a Count and his son, and Dave and Queenie Martin are the only ones who can help. As Louise believes her mother is well-connected in New York society, the count's son wants her to marry his daughter. Annie must become a lady before Dave and Queenie can persuade the Count and his son that they are socialites with New York's upper crust.
