Pit Stop
Granville Willard notices Rick Bowman, a drag racing street punk who comes to the attention of the shrewd businessman. Upon his release from prison, Willard extends him an offer of sponsorship to drive in the NASCAR stock car series. Bowman accepts and enters the realm of "figure eight" racing, which is a demolition derby-adjacent sport. He's the brash hotshot Hawk Sidney, who reigns supreme on the figure-eight track. Bowman and Sidney are at odds, and Hawk's attractive companion Jolene falls prey to Bowman's seduction. In the next scene, Bowman's attention is drawn to Ellen McLeod, the wife of great racer Ed McLeod. As Bowman progresses in the ranks, his regard for his buddies diminishes, giving place to an obsessive desire to be the best at everything.
