Paulie
One of Paulie's janitors is an immigrant from Russia who tells Paulie about his ordeal at the research center where the intelligent parrot lives and is mistreated. Stuttering child received Paulie as a gift many years prior, and the rest is history. It is only after her father has removed him from her sight that he is able to convince the girl that what she has been taught about language is false. Before being transferred to the institute where he now lives, Paulie has a series of encounters with a pawn shop owner, an elderly widow, a Mexican-American troubadour, and a would-be robber.
