Oscar Hopkins, a misfit, becomes an Anglican minister after being abused as a child by his evangelistic father, and develops a divine obsession with gambling. Lucinda Leplastrier, a wealthy Australian heiress, is in London looking for materials for her newly acquired glass factory back home. Oscar decides to travel to Australia as a missionary and meets Lucinda aboard ship, sparking a mutual obsession. They make a bet that will change their lives forever.
