Max Carlyle earns a comfortable job as a commercial director in Los Angeles and enjoys a pleasant family life with his wife, Mimi, and two children. When Carlyle visits to New York City to visit his friend Charlie, who has been diagnosed with AIDS, he has repeated encounters with a stunning woman named Karen and eventually sleeps with her.
