Frank Redmond, a no-nonsense 55-year-old working-class guy who has spent decades as a shipbuilder in Glasgow, is unexpectedly laid off after decades of hard work. For the first time in his life, he finds himself without a job or a sense of direction, and he is too proud to seek help from others. Though his greatest friends-sly Danny, fearful Norman, and cynical Eddie-are always there for him, Frank nevertheless feels utterly alone in the world. Frank is inspired to take on a new task by Danny's offhand quip. After taking stock of his relationships with beloved wife Joan and all-but-estranged son Rob, Frank is resolved to bolster his own self-confidence in the next weeks and months. Swimmable water will be his challenge as he attempts the nearly impossible.
