The master of operatic intellectual romance has come up with a very silly, fast-paced love story. Jacques Dutronc, a French pop singer, is a brilliant computer programmer who has been diagnosed with a terminal brain ailment, and Sophie Marceau is the feisty star of a brilliantly weird mentalist nightclub show. During their May-September fling, which mirrors Zulawski and Marceau's own marriage, they both move through their own childhood traumas while also trying to keep Lucas' grasp of language. My Nights... is not only a visual treat, but also a literal one. The only way Lucas can keep his mind from evaporating is to speak with more and more rhymes and metaphors, until the whole world is a sweet-toothed, Zulawskian word-association game, and he can't stop.
