As a battle rages in the Bougainville province of Papua-New Guinea, a young girl is captivated by the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, which is being read at school by the only white man in the area. In 1991, a fight in the South Pacific over a copper mine tore the island of Bougainville apart. Hugh Laurie's "Popeye" offers the youngsters of Matilda's fourteen-year-old town an escape with Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. However, on a war-torn island, fiction might have dangerous implications.
