Taking the train from Moscow to Kharkov in the Ukraine in March 1933. He disembarks at a little station and walks through the country, witnessing the miseries of a famine. Everywhere he travels, he finds Soviet secret service operatives determined to keep the public unaware of the calamity. Stalin's forced collectivisation of agriculture led to suffering and destruction; it was akin to mass murder. By conveying the terrible news to the West, Jones successfully undermines his powerful opponent, Pulitzer Prize-winning pro-Stalin journalist Walter Duranty.
