Despite the fact that banker Roger Hobbs prefers to spend his holiday time alone with his wife, Peggy, she insists on taking the entire family on a vacation to a California beach property that turns out to be unsightly and in disrepair. Daughter Katey, who is self-conscious about her braces, and son Danny, who is hooked to television, both refuse to go to the beach with their families. When Hobbs' two unhappily married daughters and their spouses join the family, he realizes that he must help everyone with their difficulties in order to find some peace of mind.
