Following the closing of their shipyard in Northern Spain, a few former employees remain in touch: Santa, José, Lino, Amador, Sergei, and Reina. They mostly congregate at a bar run by a former coworker, Rico. Santa is the most outwardly confident member of the group and the unofficial leader. A legal case involving a shipyard lamp he broke during a demonstration against the closure looms over him. José is enraged because his wife, Ana, has a job while he is unemployed. The chasm between them is growing wider, and he is afraid she will abandon him for a coworker. Ana works night hours at a fish industry despite her rheumatic legs and believes her appearance has been lost. Not everyone, including her boss, appears to concur. Lino is an elderly family man who is tenaciously chasing positions that are beyond his qualifications. Amador, the group's senior member, has devolved into alcoholism following his wife's abandonment; he maintains an increasingly apparent charade that his wife will return from vacation shortly.
