Moffie
André Carl van der Merwe's book, Moffie (a disparaging Afrikaans name for a gay man), tells the narrative of Nicholas van der Swart, who has known since childhood that he's different from everyone else. The masculine image his family and his ancestors have of him is beyond his grasp no matter what he does. South Africa's army drafted him at the age of 19 and he found the system near to its demise and yet still in full force. This is a long-overdue account about the emotional and physical hardships faced by countless young men during the South African border struggle against communism.
