Abbie Polin (Crystal), a New York doctor, travels to Los Angeles to see his father, Abe (King), a Hollywood extras supervisor. Abe has suffered a heart attack and must be treated at the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. For many years, their bond has been strained. Henry Winkler directed this film for the first time, and much of the filming took place at the MGM Studios in Culver City, California, not far from Hollywood. When Abbie's love interest, Lisa, comes for a visit, she bonds with Abe, who gets along with everyone but his son. As Abe's memory begins to fail him, a brain aneurysm is discovered. As the relationship between him and his son grows, Abbie attempts to get Abe a speaking role in a film before it's too late.
