Darius Lovehall is a young black poet living in Chicago who meets and falls in love with Nina Moseley, a beautiful and skilled photographer who becomes his girlfriend. While attempting to determine whether or not they have a "love thing" or are simply "kicking it," they hang out with their buddies, who are also discussing love and sex. Then Nina puts Darius' affections to the test, which sets off a chain of love problems in its wake.
