Longtime Companion
Longtime Companion follows the lives of a small group of friends beginning in 1981, when the disease was first mentioned in the New York Times. We witness as the sickness devastates the lives of our heroes, initially referred to as "Gay-Related-Immune-Disorder." Jumping between Manhattan and Fire Island, vignettes take us from the disease's early days of it-couldn't-happen-to-me thinking to the invasive influence it has had on all of our lives today. The film's title is inspired by the New York Times' failure to mention homosexual relationships in its obituary section during this time period. Rather, the survivors were referred to as the deceased's "Longtime Companions."
