Eli, 17, and his family relocate to the isolated farm of reclusive Waylon, a man whose dark past threatens to consume him. While Eli's family works to restore the desolate fields, he becomes fascinated by the forests. Eli meets the mysterious Amanda while working on the farm when she hands him an apple. The next day, she convinces him to stay away from the deep woods. He breaks this promise one night, reeling from a violent encounter with his father, and discovers her body hanging from a tree.
