When Singapore surrendered to the Japanese in 1942, the Allied POWs, mostly British but with a few Americans, were imprisoned in Changi prison. There were no walls or barbed-wire fences because there was nowhere for the prisoners to flee to. Among the detainees is American Cpl. King, a wheeler dealer who has made a good life for himself in the camp. Peter Marlowe, an upper-class British officer who admires King's zest for life, quickly becomes a friend.
