During the Ashura holiday on 3 April 2004, Iraqi rebels loyal to Shiite leader Muktada As-Sadr launched an insurgency in the Polish zone. The Poles, along with Bulgarian soldiers and Iraqi police, were tasked with defending City Hall under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Grzegorz Kaliciak. The conflict grew into the largest Polish engagement since World War II. Although no allied soldiers were killed, about 80 insurgents were killed in a counter-attack.
