Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life
Jakob goes to the Institute Benjamenta, which is run by brother and sister Johannes and Lisa Benjamenta, to learn how to become a servant. With seven other men, he studies under Lisa, who teaches them silly things like how to move, draw circles, and be submissive. He asks for a bigger room. No other students come to school, and none leave for work. Johannes is unhappy, bossy, and has no idea how the school works. Lisa is beautiful, at first very controlled, then on the verge of breaking down. It smells like incest. Jakob is attracted to Lisa, and she may be attracted to him. As winter comes, she loses her mind. Things get worse, and Johannes notes that all of this has happened since Jakob came. Is there a connection between things?
