In 1891, the French painter Paul Gauguin leaves Paris and goes to Tahiti to start making art again as a free man, far from the rules of European art. On his journey of discovery, he faces loneliness and illness, but he also sees the beauty of wild nature and falls in love with Tehura, a young native girl who becomes his wife and model.
