There were five Marines and one Navy Corpsman who were photographed on February 23, 1945, by Joe Rosenthal, raising the United States flag on Mount Suribachi. John "Doc" Bradley, Pvt. Rene Gagnon, and Pvt. Ira Hayes are three of the six surviving servicemen who fought in the campaign to take Iwo Jima from the Japanese.
