'Geoff'/'Boy' Wellum joined the Royal Air Force in May1940, realizing that the RAF needed all the men it could get to take on the Luftwaffe. He was the RAF's youngest-ever Spitfire pilot. He quickly becomes close with his squadron's aviators after a rigorous training regiment. Even if the risk is greater in the air, on the ground, alcohol, sports, and attractive women like Sarah, in Geoff's case, provide much-needed solace. His tour of service lasts 18 months before he is relieved of duty due to a heavy psychological toll.
